The Taxi & VIP Transport Atlas

Every visitor to the Turks and Caicos eventually asks the same question: how do I actually get around? There's no public transport, no metered taxis, and no Uber. What exists instead is a two-tier private-hire market - shared, per-passenger taxi vans on one side, and a growing fleet of private VIP car services on the other - layered on top of a government fare schedule that isn't always followed. This Atlas sets out who actually runs that market, what they charge, how the two tiers compare, and what to know before you get in the vehicle.

Taxis in the Turks and Caicos are almost always large passenger vans (Ford E-Series, Chevrolet Express, Ford Transit), not sedans, and fares are quoted as a total for up to two passengers, not per person, with each additional passenger beyond two adding a half fare on top. This is widely described as set by the Road Traffic Ordinance, though in practice the Ordinance grants the power to prescribe fares by regulation without the published regulations actually containing a fare table, so the dollar figures below come from the Ministry of Tourism and taxi operators themselves, not a citable government gazette.

A solo traveller pays the same as two. Because the quoted fare is a flat rate for the first two passengers combined rather than a per-person rate, travelling alone doesn't halve it. A $28 fare to Grace Bay is $28 whether one person or two are riding; it only changes once a third passenger joins, adding roughly half again on top. Whatever the source, it's standard practice to confirm the total price for the whole party, luggage included, before departing.

VIP / private car services are the newer, faster-growing tier: pre-booked, private, and priced per vehicle rather than per head, typically in a Chevrolet Suburban or Cadillac Escalade seating up to six. For a group of four or more, a VIP transfer is often close to taxi pricing while skipping the shared-ride wait at the airport - drivers meet guests directly outside arrivals rather than filling a shuttle van first. A car service is typically capped around $120 for villa and out-of-town runs and ranges $50-130 per car generally, against a $4-per-bag surcharge for taxis carrying more than two bags per passenger.

How to spot a licensed vehicle

  • An orange Road Safety Department sticker displayed on the passenger door glass, showing the registration date and expiry.
  • Current registration plates reading 'TCI Taxi' or the relevant public-service-vehicle class above the plate number.
  • No taxi meter and no ride-hailing app: if a driver claims to be running an Uber or Lyft, that's not a real service operating in the territory.
  • South Caicos in particular has been noted to have both legal and unlicensed taxis operating; the sticker and plate above are the two things worth checking there.
Carry cash. Across almost every operator in this Atlas, taxi and VIP alike, cash is the expected and often the only accepted payment method - card readers and payment apps are the exception, not the rule, and visitors have been caught out assuming otherwise. Sea Breeze Taxi & Tours and 3J's Transportation are the two operators on this page confirmed to also take Zelle, Venmo, Cash App or card, and a handful of the VIP companies run online booking platforms that take a card upfront. Beyond those, assume cash only unless the operator tells you otherwise when you book. ATMs are limited outside Providenciales' main commercial areas, and non-bank ATMs at tourist facilities typically add a $3-$5 surcharge per withdrawal - bring small bills, especially for Grand Turk, North & Middle Caicos, and Salt Cay.
On negotiated and remote fares: outlying parts of Providenciales - Sapodilla Bay, Taylor Bay, Chalk Sound, Northwest Point, Malcolm's Road and the Amanyara area - often carry a higher, negotiated fare, since a driver dropping off there is unlikely to pick up a return fare nearby. Pre-booked taxis and all VIP transfers are negotiated directly with the company and are not bound by the airport queue fare schedule below.

Plan your ride

Pick your island, party size and trip type for a plain steer on which tier usually makes more sense, then message an operator directly. This is a rule-of-thumb guide, not a fare quote: get an exact price from the operator before you book.

Providenciales airport shared taxi fares

Shared queue shuttle only · applies to walk-up taxis at Providenciales International Airport (PLS)

These are the posted, shared-shuttle rates for passengers joining the taxi queue at PLS arrivals - not pre-booked or private taxis, which are negotiated separately and cost more. Each fare below is a total for the first two passengers, not a per-person rate, with roughly half again added for each additional passenger. Two pieces of luggage per person typically ride free; expect a surcharge of roughly $4 per additional bag.

One fare covers one trip, airport to your door. Stops along the way, such as the supermarket, a liquor store or a villa check-in office, are not included. Each stop is charged as a separate fare, so a quick grocery run on the way from the airport can double the price. If you need to stop, agree the total with the driver before you leave the airport, or have groceries delivered to your accommodation instead.

A crowded long tail: beyond the operators above, Providenciales' tourism directories list well over a hundred further VIP and taxi trading names, most of them single- or two-vehicle businesses that come and go with the season. They're easy to find through hotel concierges and local Facebook groups, but with no published licensing register to check them against, this Atlas doesn't attempt to list them individually.

Grand Turk

Zone fares & operators

Grand Turk runs its own system: the island is divided into four north-to-south zones (A-D), and the Grand Turk Taxi Association posts its own per-person fare board at the Cruise Center taxi stand for its members - the closest thing to a metered system anywhere in the territory. This is the Association's own schedule, not a Government gazette rate: the Road Traffic Ordinance gives the Governor power to prescribe passenger fares by regulation, but the published Road Traffic Regulations don't actually contain a fare table, so there's no statutory dollar figure to cite here. Fares are posted at the taxi stand and apply from the Cruise Center only, not to it; agree the total before setting off.

Why these fares look low next to Providenciales: Grand Turk is only about 7 miles from north to south, so even the furthest zone, the Lighthouse at the northern tip, is a short 15-20 minute ride from the Cruise Center at the southern end. There's no equivalent to Providenciales' long resort-to-airport hauls here, which is reflected in the fare table below.
Destination (from Cruise Center)ZoneFare, per person, one-way
Governor's BeachA$4-$6
Cockburn TownB$5-$10
Pillory Beach / Grand Turk Lighthouse areaC-D$8-$10

Ranges reflect a genuine spread across several independently corroborating sources checked for this Atlas (visittci.com, IQCruising, Cruise Alert, Adventour Begins, and current Tripadvisor traveller reports). visittci.com's published figure sits at the lower end of each range; the third-party guides and recent traveller reports consistently sit at the top. Posted rates at the Cruise Center taxi stand on the day take precedence over all of them.

North & Middle Caicos

The last of the island taxis

No public transport and only two to four taxis serve both islands combined, all based on North Caicos. Reservation in advance is essential; taxis are not generally found waiting anywhere except occasionally at Bellefield Landing, where the Providenciales ferry lands. Middle Caicos pickups typically carry a surcharge for the roughly 25-minute crossing of the causeway connecting the two islands.

South Caicos & Salt Cay

The smallest markets

South Caicos has no taxi queue at its airport and only a small number of taxis, so everything here is pre-booked. There is one established private transfer operator on the island, Nae's Luxury Transfer, which the Salterra resort uses for its own guest transfers and which also runs island tours and restaurant runs. For getting around independently, a self-drive jeep or car from one of the two rental companies below, reserved in advance, is the practical alternative; both have very few vehicles.

Salt Cay has no taxis, buses, or conventional rental cars at all, and nothing is available for hire at the airport. Transport is limited to golf carts (roughly $85-100/day, usually including fuel), bicycles, and walking; the island is under 4 miles end to end. Arrange a cart or an airport pickup through your villa or host before you arrive, as several include cart or bicycle use for guests and there is no rental counter to walk up to.

Common questions

Is Uber or Lyft available in the Turks and Caicos?
No. There is no ride-hailing app operating anywhere in the territory. Transport runs entirely through taxi companies and VIP car services, booked by phone, WhatsApp or email.
Are taxi fares metered?
No. Turks and Caicos taxis don't use meters. Fares are a flat total for the first two passengers rather than a per-person rate (a solo traveller pays the same as two), with roughly half again added per extra passenger; on Grand Turk it's a zone board posted by the Taxi Association instead. Neither is a published government price list, and fares are frequently exceeded in practice - always confirm the total price for your whole group before departing.
When does a VIP car service make more sense than a taxi?
Once your group reaches four to six people, a VIP transfer - priced per vehicle rather than per passenger - is often comparable in cost to a shared taxi and comes with no wait at the airport, since the driver meets you directly outside arrivals rather than filling a shared shuttle first.
Do I need to tip my driver?
It's customary, typically in the region of 10-15% of the fare, though it isn't mandatory and isn't included in the quoted price.
Can I get a taxi on South Caicos or Salt Cay?
On South Caicos, yes, but only pre-booked: there's no taxi queue at the airport, and Nae's Luxury Transfer is the established private transfer operator. A self-drive jeep from Harbour Adventures Rentals or Seaview Supermarket & Rentals is the alternative. Salt Cay has no taxis at all; golf carts arranged through your villa, bicycles and walking are the only options.
Can my taxi stop at the supermarket on the way from the airport?
Only at extra cost. The airport fare covers a single trip from the airport to your accommodation; any stop along the way is charged as a separate fare. Agree the total with the driver before leaving the airport, or arrange a grocery delivery to your accommodation instead.
How is luggage handled?
Shared airport taxis typically allow two pieces of luggage per passenger for free, with a surcharge of roughly $4 for each additional bag. VIP car services generally include luggage in the flat per-vehicle fare, subject to what fits in the vehicle.

If your company is missing from this Atlas, or something above is wrong or out of date, that's genuinely useful to know: get in touch and it'll be checked and corrected. This page is built and maintained by Thrive, the digital consultancy behind it (and behind a number of the operator websites linked above, including Champion VIP). If you'd like a proper website, online booking, or a fuller listing here, that's a Thrive conversation rather than a real estate one.
